Hi! Iโm Karen Gifford, the voice behind The Food Charlatan. I started this blog back in 2011 as a bored new mom with no clue how to make dinner. I was SO excited to bake bake bake all day. Eric, my husband, would come home from work to find a mountain of dishes and me on the living room floor licking my plate after a photoshoot.
Fourteen years later, Iโve tested over 1,000 recipes until each one is just right so you can cook with confidence (and maybe laugh along the way). Iโm a self-trained chef. Iโm a chocolate-on-my-nose, gleam-in-my-eye home cook with a messy kitchen and a lot of love for food. I want you to feel like youโve got a friend in the kitchen whoโs made all the mistakes so you donโt have to.
My kitchen fails areโwait for itโlegendary. (Ask me how many times Iโve lit something on fire under the broiler) But theyโre also exactly what makes me The Food Charlatan: just a real-life home cook who wants to get a decent dinner on the table without losing my marbles. If I can make a recipe work, so can you. (And Iโve got the broiler-scorched potholders to prove it.)
What started as plate-licking photo shoots on a fuzzy white blanket as my photo backdrop, has become a full-time job. Thousands of hours in the kitchen have helped me learn what works time and time again and share it with you (check out my favorite kitchen tools, too!). Iโve worked with brands like Gortonโs, Zoup, and the National Pork Board and served as a brand ambassador for Rodelle. Every recipe still comes through my kitchen in Sacramento, where I test it and tweak it until it earns its place on the blog.
The Food Charlatan isnโt about perfection. Itโs about showing up in the kitchen, having fun, and feeding the people you love.
Over 14+ years Iโve cooked daily for a family of six, fed countless friends, and cooked along side millions of readers whoโve made these recipes in their own kitchens. For me, blogging is about community. From seasoned pros to โwhatโs a roux?โ beginners, weโre in this together! I canโt give you a cookie in person. But I CAN give you my absolute best recipe for one! And then we can talk about it! Isnโt this so fun? Iโm so glad youโre here!!
My family is my life! This blog is still personal. I share stories about my family because theyโre part of the story, too:
